For 60 years social work's world view, practice theory, and curriculum have neglected the spiritual dimension. Most secular social workers are unprepared to respond to clients as whole persons or to help them deal with spiritual/religious issues and factors which may be intertwined with their problem/life situations. the purpose of this exploratory study was to answer the triune question: |What does the secular spiritual-sensitive social worker need to know, be, and be able to do?| Ten spiritual-sensitive secular social workers and psychologists in varied practice settings were interviewed in depth. the sampling demographic variables were gender, age, beliefs, race, and ethnic background. the respondents used diverse traditional practice models with persons who represented a cross-section of social work clients and belief systems. the unstructured open-ended interview asked respondents to share their practice wisdom, perspectives, feelings, and dilemmas. Respondents rated the researcher for acceptance, validity, and relevance using the Kahn and Cannell (1958) Rating Scale. the major findings were: (a) secular practitioners transferred generic professional knowledge, values, and skills to respond to spiritual needs of clients; (b) respondents possessed awareness and knowledge about spirituality which they distinguished from religion; (c) spiritual-sensitive variables were identified; and (d) assessment revealed that a significant number of 78 client systems discussed had spiritual/religious issues intertwined with their problem/life situations. Personal spiritual qualities exemplified by the respondents were compassion, courage, commitment, humility, trust, hope, and positive attitudinal response. Respondents possessed a high level of spiritual maturity interwoven with emotional maturity and professional expertise. Respondents were attuned to recognize spiritual needs, tensions, spiritual immaturity, and spiritual/religious language of traditional, folk, and non-Western belief systems. Areas for further research were identified. the findings generated suggestive additive content for integration into the existing social work curriculum. It was concluded that spiritual-sensitive practice is not a model but an intrinsic aspect of every phase in the helping process. It was recommended that CSWE and NASW form a task group to review this study and initiate steps to close the existing conceptual gap in social work education and practice.
